Knowledge is the first step in prevention

What Causes Cancer

Cancer occurs when cells grow and divide uncontrollably due to accumulated DNA damage and mutations. This is the final common pathway for all cancers.

Biological Factors

  • Hereditary: Inherited gene mutations (5–10% of cancers, e.g., BRCA, Lynch syndrome).
  • Obesity: Promotes inflammation and hormonal imbalance.
  • Inflammation: Chronic inflammation damages DNA.
  • Low Immune System: Reduces the body’s ability to eliminate abnormal cells.

Environmental Factors

  • Radiation (UV from sun, medical imaging)
  • Tobacco smoke, air pollution, and chemical carcinogens
  • Infections (Hep B/C, HPV, H. pylori)
  • Poor diet and excessive alcohol

Cancer Prevention

Key Strategies:

  • Maintain healthy weight
  • Regular physical activity
  • Plant-based, anti-inflammatory diet
  • Avoid tobacco and limit alcohol
  • Get vaccinated (Hep B, HPV)
  • Excellent sun protection
